Frank Ryan Bursary
The Frank Ryan Bursary has been established by the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) to honor one of its most distinguished founders and lifelong members.
With a career spanning over sixty years, Frank Ryan’s abiding passion for design and design education in Ireland was manifest. During his distinguished career, he lectured at the National College of Art and Design and at Griffith College Dublin. He was a committee member for the formation of the School of Art and Design at Dublin Institute of Technology and he served on the panel of examiners for the National Council of Educational Awards.
In recognition of his continuing legacy to design education, Frank was the recipient of the Professional Excellence Award from Griffith College Dublin. This legacy can be seen today in the work of young designers studying on the programmes he helped to establish, joining the societies he formed and working within a profession for which he set the standards.
A master designer and craftsman, Frank’s design experience extended to commercial and retail interiors, showrooms, exhibition stands, fashion shows and visitor centres in twentytwo cities across nine countries, often in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland. He was an advisor to Kilkenny Design Workshops and to the Heritage Trust Exhibition at the Guinness Hop Store. He worked with Eigse, specialising in heritage. He founded Heritage Planning and Design Services and was a member of the design team for the Irish Pavilion at Expo ’92 in Seville.
Frank was a founding member and Fellow of The Institute of Designers in Ireland and also a founder member of The Institute of Creative Advertising and Design. As a designer he believed in the importance of promoting the highest standards of design and professional practice.
A wise and generous craftsman, Frank, through his work and dedication for design, contributed to the cultural life of Ireland, freely sharing his skills and knowledge with others. The Frank Ryan Bursary will ensure that Frank’s vision and influence will continue to benefit future generations of designers in Ireland.
What is the Bursary?
The Frank Ryan Bursary will fund design students who wish to pursue an
international educational opportunity or a design project overseas. The
intent of the bursary is to provide
assistance to cover travel costs, housing costs, materials and research.
The Bursary is being established in honour of Frank’s involvement
in design and design education and as a commitment to celebrating excellence
and exploration among our emerging designers. The Bursary will be managed
by the IDI and a bank account in the Bursary’s name will be founded.
We will also develop a section of the IDI Website that will honour Frank,
outline the Bursary and application procedure and promote our sponsors.
Who is it for?
The Bursary will be awarded to a full-time design student of demonstrable
ability who wishes to participate in an approved international educational
program, attend an international design event, or develop an agreed course-related
project that requires international travel.
How will it work?
Design students will be asked to submit a proposal outlining details of
why they require funding. A panel of judges, made up of IDI Council members,
industry experts and educational advisors, will then assess the proposals
and award the bursary to the most suitable candidate. Shortlisted applicants
may be invited for an interview with the judging panel.
At the end of the judging process the winner will receive a cash award
towards their proposal and a framed certificate.
