Registered Designer

Any design practitioners and design educators working in Ireland can apply for admission to the Register of Designers. Becoming part of the Register is not exclusive to IDI members. This is for Applications as REGISTERED DESIGNER only- It is NOT the IDI Membership application.

In Ireland, a Registered Designer is one who has gained professional competencies through education, training and professional experience. The following form allows the applicant to enter these competencies and apply to the Register. The register will give a preliminary score at the end which is subject to verification.

You must be a member of the IDI or another professional design body (eg. ICAD, RIAI) in Ireland before you apply.
At the end of this process you will be awarded a number of points. To acheive Registered Designer you must achieve 25 points. To achieve Senior member of the IDI & Registered Designer you must achieve 60 points. To achieve Fellow of the IDI & Registered Designer you must achieve 85 points.
Payment is required on submission of the form and it will not be processed without payment. The payment for registered designer is an annual payment and is ring fenced to support CPD.

3. Postgraduate Education

Enter any design postgraduate qualifications (levels 8-10). If you have a design undergraduate degree, you can add a non-design postgraduate degree which contributes to practice. more details

If you have two or more postgraduate degrees please add them. (for example you have an undergraduate degree in Interior Architecture and a Post Graduate degree in Professional Practice). You can add formal post graduate qualifications not at level 8 below. (Example: Special awards as part of a Springboard Course, Passive House, etc…..These courses are subject to the approval of the Registration Committee.)

4. Work Experience — Design Practice

List each position held in professional design practice. Note your overall years entered cannot exceed the total number of years working in design. Note that, if you were both a team leader and designer, then enter team leader as it attracts higher points. You cannot enter the same year more than one role.

7. Advocacy

The Registration board defines advocacy as voluntary activity in the promotion of design industry or community. This category reflects the work done by those organisers who promote design both within the community and raise awareness Irish design. This includes involvement in national bodies, design week, regional initiatives, publications, design conferences, workshops and seminars. We acknowledge that the list may not comprehensive and can add to it if requested.

Please note registration requires the Designer to maintain 20 CPD Points each 12 month period and pay for registration on an annual basis.
