Event Recap: Design Declares in Galway

Event Recap: Design Declares in Galway

The day was filled with honest conversations, shared values, and creative energy all centered around one powerful question: How can designers shape a sense of place that actively addresses the climate crisis?

On Tuesday, May 20th, Amplify Voices for Change took place in Galway, hosted by Design Declares and CREW.

Charlotte Barker (IDI CEO) launched the day by introducing Design Declares as well as the event’s agenda.

Lara Hanlon from Portion Collaborative was the first speaker of the morning. She asked attendees to reflect on their primary motivations for climate-focused work and also covered the 8 acts of emergency which you can read on the Design Declares Ireland Website.

Martina Uí Dholáin from Udaras na Gaeltachta and Ainslie Peters of CREW discussed how GLOW 2.0 is using communication design to build a common language for promoting eco-tourism across the island of Ireland. Helping to connect people, places, and purpose through the power of design.

Following this, Jo Anne Butler of Superfolk reminded the audience of how important it is to listen to nature in our work.

Brett O’Mahony, Adam Barry, and Ray Ó Foghlú shared the story of Studio Saol and Hometree’s collaboration. This conversation delved into a partnership grounded in care and long-term thinking.

The event concluded with a keynote address from Duncan Stewart, where he challenged all those in the room to move from passive optimism to active, practical hope.

The event also saw the launch of the new Design Declares Playbook. This Playbook is a brilliant tool designed by Chart Studio to help designers embed climate action into practice. You can find the Playbook at future Design Declares Events.
